More soccer-

Sorry I have been slow to update. I have been busy at work (and travels). Lets recap the week WRT Eurocup 2008:

Thursday: Germany vs. Portugal. Oetinger Dunkel Hefeweizen, very very good. Germany wins, HONK! HONK! SING! HONK! YELL! HONK!

Friday: Turkey Vs. Croatia. Watched the riot polizei get ready for the game. Had a stinky tap beer at Doner Kebab. How hard is it to say "Ein Weiss Bier, bitte" yet I manage to screw it up. Turkey wins! HONK! HONK! HONK! HONK! SCREAM IN TURKISH! HONK HONK! HONK!

Saturday: Trip to Baden-Baden, saw 1800 year old Roman bath ruins. Cool! Erdinger Dunkel Weissbier with Doner. Yummy. Russia vs. Netherlands, Schoferhoffer Hefeweisen, very good. Russian wins. NO HONKING???!!??

Sunday: We go to see the Stuttgart half marathon. I manage a Maltesser hefeweissen while we wath the race (at 9 AM on a Sunday!). We go out to the Ritter Chocolate factory since their museum is open. Great lunch (Schonbrun Hefeweisen, very very good) and then we go to the "chocolate" museum. Turns out, it was actually a nice museum of modern art! We did not look like typical patrons with two kids and a stroller. She said "You know this is a museum of modern art?" and I responded "I do now!" Great stuff, some cool technical stuff (control related). They actually do have a chocolate store and chocolate museum, so we were in the right place. Sapin vs. Italy, Spain wins on penalty kicks after not scoring in 90 minutes of playing + over time. Exciting! Action Packed! "Half back passes to the center, back to wing, back to center! Center Holds it! Holds it! holds it!" No honking, everyone must be asleep. Krombacker Radler with dinner, very odd. Fruity (lemon?) and fizzy more than beer taste.

Ahh! You've discovered the german phenomenon of incorporating beer into any drink imaginable! I'm sure you've encountered Beck's Lemon and Orange by now (lighter alcohol content at about 2-3% abv). They taste like mountain dew and fanta, respectively. Sounds gross, but they're pretty refreshing on a summer scorcher. Radler: half beer (usually a pils or a lager style), half lemonade. I don't particuarly like these, but many of my friends did. Diesel: half cola, half beer. Get ready, they get funkier. Bananaweizen: banana nectar and hefeweizen. Because true German weizens have banana/coriander undertones (depending on the yeast I think), the nectar brings out the fruitier tones. They are a bit sweet for me, but worth a try! I've also seen variations on this in a fanta-weizen (orange fanta and hefeweizen) and even a grapefruit-weizen (I saw this when I was in Dresden).

Enjoy!

Thanks! I finally found the biergarten by the Hbf downtown. They had radler and diesel. I wondered what those were... I will eventually try them out as well. Sounds like you had a pretty good sampling yourself!
